Wine Tasting – A Christmas Recipe by The Wine Society 2nd December 2014

These are our detailed tasting notes.

Aperitif Wines

Crémant Du Jura Brut, Domaine De Montbourgeau

Nose

Floral

Palate

The chardonnay came through with a fruity taste and a creamy mouthfeel. The fine mousse and dry finish make this wine a lovely aperitif.

Nyetimber Brut Classic Cuvée 2009

Nose

Dry, biscuity fruit.

Palate

An English wine made in the classic champagne style, it is indistinguishable from good french fizz In character and is right down the middle in-between a light ‘Pol Roger’ style and a full bodied ‘Alfred Gratien’ style.

Herederos De Argüeso Las Medallas Manzanilla

Nose

Light subtle flor.

Palate

A lovely subtle, fruity dryness, great as an aperitif. Not everybody gets on with these dry aperitif sherries, but it is a taste well worth acquiring.

Party Wines

A Fistful Of Schist Reserve Chenin Blanc, Coastal 2014

Nose

A spice shop a long way up the breeze.

Palate

Mellow peach stones. A much richer mouthfeel than would be expected from a typical Chenin Blanc. A very impressive wine for the price.

Duo Des Deux Mers, Sauvignon-Viognier Vin De France 2013

Nose

Ian detected sugar puffs while Angela found nougat.

Palate

Full bodied – a bit like golden syrup with a lot less sweetness.

Saint-Chinian, Domaine Raynier 2013

Nose

Summer pudding.

Palate

Light ribena.

Silbador Carmenère 2013

Nose

An old library.

Palate

Smooth and rich, but unstructured. Angela detected liquorice. Ian likened it to a young, un-sweet port.

Christmas Day

Domaine Jones Blanc, Grenache Gris Côtes Catalanes 2013

Nose

Ian found a flinty fruity nose. Angela detected light marshmallow.

Palate

Angela found it very creamy. Ian perceived full fruit in the mouth.

Domaine Cordier, Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Pouilly 2011

Nose

Ian found it fresh and peppery, Angela detected vanilla.

Palate

Creamy, fruity, honeyed with a lingering finish.

Seresin Rachel Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011

Nose

Angela found boiled spring cabbage, while Ian wallowed in deep cherries and blackcurrant.

Palate

Dry cherry stones. Lovely balance of fruit and tannin. Brings together Kiwi fruit power with Burgundian structure.

Châteauneuf-Du-Pape, Domaine Du Vieux Lazaret 2011

Nose

Ian detected light raspberry, Angela found ‘Tunes’.

Palate

Spicy raspberry coulis with a very pleasant finish.

Château Sénéjac, Haut-Médoc 2005

Nose

Angela savoured Tayberries on the nose, while Ian found old leather and cedar.

Palate

A lovely deep fruitiness (blackberries and blackcurrants) balanced by mellow tannins. The satisfying dry finish completed a wonderful drinking experience. This wine provides everything you would expect from a good claret.

Stanton And Killeen Rutherglen Muscat, 12 Years Old

Nose

Ian relished ‘Rum and raisins and all things nice,’ while Angela had ‘Rum, raisins and fruits in brandy.’

Palate

Angela describes it as ‘warm and comforting – gives you a massive hug – delicious.’ And Ian’s take on the finish: ‘long, long, long…’

A great wine for Christmas pudding.

Boxing Day and Beyond

The Society’s Exhibition Grüner Veltliner 2013

Nose

Ian detected lemon pepper, while Angela found peach and apricot.

Palate

Balanced mineral taste with a fresh finish.

Ockfen Bockstein Riesling Kabinett, Von Kesselstatt 2013

Nose

Sherbet lemon.

Palate

Ian got lemonade and violets, while Angela could only say ‘bloody horrible!’ Obviously a ‘marmite’ love-it-or-hate-it wine and we didn’t fall into the love-it category.

Beaujolais-Villages Vieilles Vignes, Château D’emeringes 2013

Nose

Light fruity raspberries.

Palate

Dry fruity food wine – more structure than your usual Beaujolais.

The Society’s Exhibition Rioja Reserva 2007

Nose

Old dusty leather.

Palate

Vanilla and blackberry perfectly balanced with smooth tannins. If you like Rioja in the traditional style, you will find no better example than this.

And relax…..

The Society’s Exhibition Tawny Port, 10 Years Old

A very nice example of tawny port.

Palate fatigue had set in by this time…

Note that there were two further wines that we were unable to taste because of time constraints Maydie Tannat 2011 50Cl and Henriques & Henriques Malvasia, 10 Years Old 50Cl.
